Stellat’en First Nation starts court proceedings

May 18, 2010 – Today, the Stellat’en First Nation are filing a petition in the British Columbia Supreme Court asking the court to stop the expansion of the Endako Mine unless and until the provincial government adequately consults with the Stellat’en and accommodates their interests.

The Endako Mine is a joint venture led by Thompson Creek Metals Company Inc. The mine has been in almost constant operation since the 1960s, extracting molybdenum, an important mineral for various industrial processes and products. Today the mine is a massive venture with tailing ponds, waste piles and huge open pits occupying over 1400 hectares of land.  MORE

In early January 2010, the CSTC Tribal Chief David Luggi sent letters to all Members of Parliament in Canada, and all the BC Members of the Legislative Assembly to raise concern and opposition to the proposed Enbridge Gateway pipeline that would cross the Aboriginal Title lands of the Carrier Nation.  READ MORE
