CSTC Disappointed with Ministers’ Mount Milligan Decision

DAKELH TRADITIONAL TERRITORY/PRINCE GEORGE, BCThe Carrier Sekani Tribal Council (CSTC) is disappointed with today’s decision by Minister Jim Prentice that the proposed Mount Milligan Gold-Copper Project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects. The Nak’azdli Whut’en, a member of the CSTC, has been calling for an improved process for addressing their concerns, in particular impacts to traditional foods and medicines. Moreover, CSTC considers the current EA process inadequate to address Nak’azdli’s rights and title.  READ MORE

December 3, 2009: “The federal government has joined the BC government in riding roughshod over the law and disrespecting the Courts by granting environmental assessment approval to Terrane Metals plans to open a low grade copper and gold mine on Nak’azdli traditional lands,” Chief Fred Sam said today. “We are the people who live here therefore shouldn’t we decide if a mine is ‘not likely to have significant adverse environmental effects’ not a Federal Minister in Ottawa who has never been to Shus Nadloh?” asked Chief Sam.   READ MORE

In early January 2010, the CSTC Tribal Chief David Luggi sent letters to all Members of Parliament in Canada, and all the BC Members of the Legislative Assembly to raise concern and opposition to the proposed Enbridge Gateway pipeline that would cross the Aboriginal Title lands of the Carrier Nation.  READ MORE
